Our news
Kinvara Hockey Club is building a multi-sport, all-weather community pitch on the Moy Road, Kinvara.
This new facility will serve South Galway and North Clare for generations — supporting hockey, multiple sports, a family walking trail, biodiversity features, and an accessible community space for all.
Thanks to your incredible support so far, we have already:
- Secured a 7-acre site
- Obtained full pitch planning permission
- Received major government grant allocations pending raising matched funding.
Next steps
2026: Construction begins on the smallerTraining D pitch, as thanks to you we have successfully raised the 5% match funding required to unlock this grant. This will reduce current rental costs and provide greater scheduling flexibility for training.
2027: Planned build start for the full-size pitch, pending raising the 30% match funding (circa €390,000) needed to draw down the second grant.
Why we’re fundraising
To support the non-grant-eligible costs, including:
- Site loan
- Access works
- Planning permission and professional fees
These are essential project costs that grants do not cover — and community support will help keep the project moving.
Our story
Kinvara Hockey Club was founded over four decades ago by local women who wanted to create sporting opportunities for girls. Today, our club includes:
- Girls’ and women’s hockey
- Social & mixed-age hockey
- Walking hockey
- Inclusive Hockey (Hockey4All)
- TY schools programme
All of this has been achieved without a home pitch.
Our training takes place on rented surfaces across South Galway, and our home match pitch is in Athlone — a 180km round trip.
Yet despite these challenges, our players have:
- Represented Connacht and Ireland
- Won multiple league titles
- Grown every programme year after year
- Built demand for new offerings, including junior boys’ hockey
